EPDM rubber (or, to give it its full name, ethylene propylene diene monomer) is a form of rubber sheeting, commonly used to finish flat roofs. It is an extremely hard-wearing material and requires very little in the way of maintenance, which explains its popularity. It is resistant to both heat and cold, completely watertight, scratch- and scuff-resistant, and an excellent insulator against electricity.
EPDM Rubber Roof Installation
When instructed to install a new or replacement EPDM rubber roof, we start off by taking some measurements and designing the roof deck. This is important, as the deck will need to support the weight of the roof, plus anything you intend to keep on top of it. We also need to determine how much of a slant your flat roof will need (if any) to prevent rainwater from pooling.
Once we have agreed the specifications and the design, we go about constructing the deck and laying the EPDM rubber. For this, we use a strong adhesive that bonds the rubber directly to the roof deck, forming an impenetrable seal. The rubber is carefully laid to ensure a tight fit across the entirety of the roof.
EPDM Rubber Roof Maintenance and Repairs
EPDM rubber doesn’t need much in the way of maintenance. It’s strong enough to resist most types of damage, but it’s probably worth inspecting it once a year as part of your general property maintenance plan. Any damage is likely to come from storm damage or deliberate damage.
In these instances, it is easy enough to repair any tears or punctures in the rubber. Our team will simply cut out the affected area, make sure the roof deck underneath has not suffered water damage, and then attach a new piece of EPDM over the gap, sealing it seamlessly alongside the rest of the roof’s coating.
